HONORING & REMEMBERING THE LOS ANGELES CIVIL UNREST OF 1992

Los Angeles, CA. (April 7, 2022) Asian and Black civil rights leaders unite on Friday, April 29, 2022 to present an outdoor, free public event in Koreatown to mark the 30th Anniversary of the LA Uprising honoring and remembering the Los Angeles civil unrest of 1992. LA UPRISING is known in the Korean American community as SAIGU, which directly translates to 4.29 or ‘April 29th’: the start date of the civil unrest. This commemorative event, LA UPRISING | SAIGU PEACE GATHERING will bring together Angelenos with Black and Asian recording artists, cultural performers and spiritual speakers for an afternoon of healing and reflection. The coalition of LA-based community and faith organizations hosting the event are Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice - LA), Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL), Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME), Koreatown Youth & Community Center (KYCC) and the Korean American Coalition (KAC).
“This gathering will bring together our diverse communities of LA for healing, remembrance, and a commitment to building a more racially equitable society. We will remember the past, be present together, and hold hope for the future,” said the leaders of these organizations in a shared statement Connie Chung Joe of Advancing Justice - LA; Michael Lawson of LAUL. James An of KAFLA; Rev. J. Edgar Boyd of FAME; Steve Kang of KYCC and Eunice Song of KAC.
Musical performances by:
- Dok2: a South Korean rapper, record producer and co-founder of Illionaire Records.
- Tayla Parx: In 2018, Parks was credited as a co-writer on three Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles including the song "Thank U, Next" by Ariana Grande. Her writing contributions on Grande's album and Justin Bieber's Justice have earned her two nominations for the Grammy Award for Album of The Year.
- Junoflo x G2 x Ted Park: Popular Korean American rappers combine for a rare set specifically crafted for the occasion.
- RÜDE CÅT: a Pop/Alternative artist, awakens, ready to give listeners a dynamic sonic experience pushing a "rise-up" perspective in his music while expressing his journey as an “underdog.”
- Justin Park: a Korean-American singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. He has toured all over North America with Amber Liu in (2018, 2020) and dates with BewhY with LiveNation Korea, and ending in Seoul, Korea for EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) 2019 with acclaimed DJ/Producer HOLLY.
- Know-Madik: known for his air-tight flows and image-rich lyrics, Know-Madik delivers empowering songs on a wide range of topics and was featured in the 2021 superbowl.
Co-Emcees are:
- Yoonj Kim: an MTV correspondent and writer. She is a former on-air talent and producer for the TPL Disrupt documentary series on Participant Media's Pivot.
- Melvin Roberts: co-anchor of Your Morning on Spectrum News 1 and host of the Emmy nominated and LA Press Club winning series The SoCal Scene.
- Alexandra Reid: an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and model. She is a former member of the South Korean girl group BP Rania, becoming the first African-American idol in the South Korean music industry.
Cultural Performers and Spiritual Speakers include:
- Hwarang Youth Foundation Drummers: A student-led volunteer service organization with chapters in LA and across the world with a focus on community beautification programs.
- First AME Church Mass Choir (gospel choir and spiritual invocation): The oldest church founded by African Americans in Los Angeles, dating to 1872.
- Faith and Community Empowerment (Korean spiritual invocation): a non-profit faith-based organization, which serves as a bridge between the Asian American community and the greater community at large in connecting and creating private and public collaborations.
